The Fogarty In-Country Collaborators play a vital role in the overall success of the Fogarty Program, because their role is to identify the potential scholars in their home country who might be good candidates for acceptance into the Fogarty Program. In many instances these Fogarty ‘Collaborators’ are former scholars in the program themselves and, since they are knowledgeable about the rigors and demands that are placed upon the Fogarty scholars, they are in a good position to know who might or might not succeed in the Program.
It is important to keep in mind that the Fogarty Program is not just about studying abroad, it’s also about assimilating into an alien environment, and taking the lessons that you learn from it and applying them into your own research and studies.
A scholar who is recommended by a Fogarty In-Country Collaborator will usually get an opportunity to interview with the Fogarty Program Director, who will make the final decision on whether they get accepted into the Program.
