“Once a Fogarty scholar always a Fogarty scholar…”

Participation in the Fogarty Program is a lifetime achievement that does not end when the scholar graduates and leaves UCLA. Through a vast network of contacts, superbly orchestrated by the Fogarty Program Director, the expectations are that the scholar will remain active in their field of Epidemiology and contribute regularly to the exchange of ideas and information that the current scholars of today need in order to facilitate their education.

Fogarty is more than a program. It is the vehicle through which many of the issues dealing with HIV/STD/AIDS can be addressed. What makes it special is the unique insight and perspective that its members bring to the forefront. Many of the top scholars in Southeast Asia who are currently tackling the huge task of understanding and reducing the spread of HIV/STD/AIDS in their home countries first gained the necessary tools to do so through their association with UCLA and the Fogarty Program.

One of the goals of the Fogarty Program is to provide a collegial atmosphere that will enable the scholar to reach their full potential, and having done so, the scholar is expected to contribute to the continued success of the program by allowing the current students to tap into their resources and take full advantage of those who came before them. That is why the Fogarty Program is creating a vehicle through its website that will allow for the exchange of data and theories.

The Fogarty Program makes a great effort to stay in contact with its former scholars, and they continue to collaborate with the UCLA Epidemiology Faculty on research-related matters. They may be gone, but they are definitely not forgotten. And on a personal level, relationships are formed and bonds are made that will last long after the scholar has returned to their home country.
